Steve Sarkisian said Quinn Ewers would start for Texas if the Longhorns had to play Oklahoma Monday, but they still want to monitor the quarterback.

“If we had to play today, sure (he’d start), but I want to monitor him daily to see him with extended work,” Sarkisian said, via Kirk Bohls.

If Ewers can’t go, Arch Manning will start again in Texas’ biggest game of the year so far: Red River vs. Oklahoma.

Ewers is not likely to lose a starting QB job due to injury, but he’s been integral to Manning’s development this season.

“Extremely humble young man. He’s a great teammate. If his name wasn’t Manning on the back of his jersey you wouldn’t know it, by the way he carries himself,” Sarkisian said earlier this month. The type of teammate that he is. I think the rapport that he and Quinn [Ewers] have with one another has led to a lot of his success. Because I think he’s very coachable. He wants to learn. He can learn from others. But his development I think has probably been the biggest key. From where he was a year and a half ago when he first got here in spring practice. To the way he played last weekend.

“And so, you know, that’s a credit to his work ethic. It’s a credit to the staff of working with him. And so, proud of him for he’s able to accomplish. And we’re in a very fortunate situation to have a starter like Quinn, but to have a capable backup in Arch is huge for us for the long-term perspective.”

In 2024, Manning has looked sharp in place of Ewers, completing 70.5% of his passes for 900 yards, while tossing in nine touchdowns with two interceptions. As a runner, he has 13 carries for 82 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

In the three games he played, Ewers had 691 yards, eight touchdowns, two interceptions and a 73.4% completion percentage. Very similar numbers to his younger teammate.

Either way, Texas should have the advantage over Oklahoma on paper. But as with every rivalry game in college football, it could certainly get weird!
