Texas QB Quinn Ewers has thrown his name into the ring of college quarterbacks who could hear their name early if he were to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. If he wants to hear it as early as he possibly can, though, it’s going to have to come after he shows scouts that he has a better handle on his deep ball.

Matt Miller and Jordan Reid discussed Ewers’ pro stock on ‘First Draft’ with Field Yates in a breakdown of several college quarterbacks. Miller was the first to bring up Ewers’ inconsistency with his longer passes and his general concern with it.

“I think we’re still waiting to see the consistency, especially on that deep ball,” Miller said. It just feels like, at times, he and AD Mitchell, he and Xavier Worthy are just not on the same page in terms of placement and where the ball needs to be.”

“Some of that is definitely on Ewers. He’s got to get better in that regard,” said Miller

Reid chimed in next and likened Ewers to a golfer who’s swinging a new driver off the tee. He thinks the Longhorn’s QB1 will eventually dial it in. It’s just that, for now, it’s going to be a bit of a learning curve until then.

“I’m with Matt – I’m a little bit concerned as far as his deep-ball consistency,” Reid said. “It’s kind of like – I don’t know how good you guy’s golf game is. But it’s like he’s testing a new driver and trying to land it on the green. Just trying to find that comfort zone and it’s just going to come with reps.”

“He just has to keep trying it but he has great receivers to do it. AD Mitchell and Xavier Worthy are two great deep threats, they’ve been great for them this year,” said Reid. “It’s just reps – that’s what’s going to come with him.”

Ewers has been pretty efficient in his second season on The 40 Acres. He has thrown for 1,358 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one interception on a 66% completion rate in five wins. He has also shown improved athleticism with a few long runs and five scores on the ground as well.

Still, Ewers’ average yards per attempt is down from the other prolific passers in his class with his longest connection of the year going for 51 yards.

Ewers has put plenty of quality play on film over his first few games this fall. If he wants to boost his stock and take his role in Texas’ offense to the next level, though, Miller and Reid agree that it’s going to have to come with distance and accuracy in doing so.
