The Texas Longhorns were pushed to their limits by the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl. That, in turn, allowed quarterback Quinn Ewers to play the role of hero once the game got to overtime.

Ewers threw a touchdown pass on fourth down to tie the game at the end of the first overtime period. The Longhorns only had a brief minute after that game-tying touchdown to discuss things before the offense quickly went back out on the field and scored the game-winning touchdown in the second overtime.

Now, Quinn Ewers has shared some insight into the sideline conversations that Texas had on the sidelines after the game-tying touchdown.

“It was pretty short and simple,” Ewers said. “Let’s go do it again. Coach [Steve Sarkisian] called a great play that we run pretty often against our own defense and it hit pretty similar. So, it’s funny how things work.”

In the first overtime period, Texas had its back firmly against the wall, trailing by a touchdown on 4th and 13 from the 28-yard line the Sun Devils went Cover-0 to try and put pressure on Ewers but he checked out of the blocking scheme and Arizona State couldn’t get home. That left Matthew Golden open for a game-tying touchdown. Then, in the second overtime, it only took one play to find the end zone when Ewers found Gunnar Helm on a wheel route for a touchdown.

After the game, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham blamed himself for the first overtime touchdown pass and credited Quinn Ewers for picking up on the coverage before the play.

“We’re in a Cover-0 look. Late in the play clock Ewers did a phenomenal job checking out, recognizing the Cover-0 look, checking into a max pro,” Dillingham said. “And I didn’t have the ability to get out of it. That’s on me. We left our guys iso’d in Cover-0 into a max pro there. I’ve gotta go into a game with the ability to get out of that call.”

Now, Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns are focused on beating the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl. That game is set to be played on Friday, January 10th at 7:30 p.m. EST at AT&T Stadium and a win would send Texas to the National Championship Game.
