Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has had quite the winding journey in college so far, from enrolling early at Ohio State to transferring to Texas.

One thing was a constant in the early going: Ewers’ mullet.

But after things didn’t really go his way early in his career, Ewers got the notion to chop it off and hope that might spark some all-around changes to his approach.

“I knew something had to change,” Quinn Ewers told Robert Griffin III on the RG3 and The Ones podcast. “So I started with the hair and decided to chop it off. And then drop weight and kind of get in better shape, get more so I could take hits better and what not, just get more comfortable.”

It paid dividends. Ewers captained Texas to a College Football Playoff berth as a sophomore in 2023. Moreover his newfound image helped land him on the cover of EA Sports College Football 25, an eagerly awaited drop for video gaming college football fans.

Quinn Ewers broke down his full thought process on getting rid of the hair with Griffin, who was fascinated by the change in look.

“I think first off just I had never really had a season that had so many ups and downs like it did that first year,” Ewers said. “And I knew something had to change. I think I kind of brought that mentality of just like being in high school, being able to go out there and play off instincts and just do whatever. But it’s a total different game. And it took me a little too long to realize that. But I think I learned quick and took it in stride.”

Now that Ewers is a likely Heisman Trophy candidate and the leader of one of college football’s top teams, he can probably wear just about whatever look he wants.

Could the mullet make a return?

“I don’t know. I don’t think so,” Quinn Ewers said. “It’s just, you’ve got to like take 30 minutes out of your day to like clean it, wash it. It’s too much. It’s too much.”
