One of the moments Texas had to feel like they were official members of the SEC was when the 2024 schedule came out. A few rivalry games will be renewed while conference staples will come to Austin for fun matchups. Quinn Ewers will be there guiding the program, entering his third season as the starting quarterback.

Ewers was asked for his reaction when he originally saw the schedule, saying Texas is excited to go up against the “best” teams out there. He also brought up one of the premier nonconference matchups in college football this season, a trip to face off against Michigan.

“Overall just excitement because to be the best you’ve got to play the best,” Ewers said on Wednesday at SEC Media Days. “We’re all fired up to go, like you said, up to Ann Arbor. It’s actually my second time going up there.”

Ohio State went up to Ann Arbor in 2021 where Ewers was a reserve quarterback for the Buckeyes. He still has parts of the rivalry in his blood though despite transferring to Texas. Ewers still calls Michigan “The Team Up North” and knows how much people in Columbus dislike the Wolverines.

Maybe some extra motivation for the former Ohio State quarterback, wanting to get a win over an opponent he was once set to face down the road.

“I was up there when Ohio State played ’em back in 2021,” Ewers said. “It’s going to be cool to go back up there and see, and now I understand the hatred that Ohio State has for them. I understand the rivalry. So it’s going to be cool to carry that.”

Texas has a lot more to look forward to once the SEC slate begins. Mississippi State will come to Austin on Sept. 28. Georgia and Florida are later down the road, matchups nobody would have imagined as conference games years ago.

Arkansas and Texas A&M are old rivalries from the Southwest Conference days both sides are excited to get back going. And then there is always Oklahoma in Dallas for the Red River Shootout.

For the first time in a long time, Texas has a plethora of big-time, big-named matchups ahead of them on the schedule. Not something they could always say in the Big 12.

“Overall excited for the season and all the great games that we’re going to have on schedule,” Ewers said.
