Texas reached the College Football Playoff as the No. 3 seed, ending a night and morning of anxious waiting after the season wrapped up with a Big 12 title.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers will now get the chance to lead his guys in the playoff against Washington, a game that figures to be a bit of an offensive shootout.

“We’re just so excited and truly honored to be a part of the playoff,” Ewers said Sunday on ESPN after the College Football Playoff rankings were revealed. “We were all just pretty fired up when they announced it. Honestly pretty speechless at the opportunity that we have in front of us, and just couldn’t be more proud of how this team works and continues to just focus on us and the opinions inside these walls instead of focusing on what’s going on outside.”

Ewers is the linchpin for the Longhorns. When he was hurt a year ago, the team struggled to maintain its high level of play and eventually faltered.

This year, Texas suffered no such slump, thus reaching the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns weren’t perfect, falling to the Oklahoma Sooners in the middle of the year, but they were good enough to bounce back and keep winning.

The sophomore gunslinger was a big part of that. Ewers put together some of his best games late in the season, finishing his last four games without throwing an interception.

Ewers piled up 3,161 yards passing and 21 touchdowns, against six interceptions. He also ran for five scores.

Now he’s looking forward to doing his part to help Texas advance through the College Football Playoff toward a national title.

“Again, it’s unreal to be a part of a team like this the way that all these guys come to work every day,” Ewers said. “It is truly inspiring for me, and I know everybody, even these coaches, just the way that, how close everybody is on this team, I’ve never really been a part of a team like that before. It’s been truly, truly honoring.”

The Sugar Bowl will be played on Jan. 1, with kickoff at 8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
