Rodney Terry evaluates Texas' first half shootout vs. Baylor
16 three-point baskets were made between Baylor and Texas in the first half of Saturday’s Big 12 Conference matchup.
The Longhorns led the Bears 42-41 at the break thanks to shooting 9-for-11 from beyond the arc, including Tyrese Hunter, who has made all four of his attempts so far on the afternoon. At halftime, head coach Rodney Terry wasn’t concerned about the shots themselves, but more proud that his guys are playing an unselfish brand of basketball with 10 assists through 20 minutes.
“We did a great job of sharing the basketball. Attacking, two-foot plays, guys moving the basketball, the ball wasn’t sticking,” Terry said at halftime. “… We’ve got to put some consecutive stops together. [Baylor] is shooting the ball really well. We’ve got to try to run them off the line and make them take tough two’s.”
Hunter and fellow guard Max Abmas have combined for 25 of Texas’ 42 points through one half. Adding in the Longhorns’ 64 percent (16-25) overall shooting percentage from the floor — the Longhorns are making it as tough as possible for the No. 9 Bears to escape the Moody Center with a win.
On Baylor’s side of things, Jayden Dunn and Ja’Kobe Walter have been just as impressive for the Bears. Combining for 27 points in the first half, they combined for five of Baylor’s seven three-point baskets on the afternoon.

In the postgame handshake line, Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry took exception to a few UCF players that celebrated the win with ‘Horns Down.’ He gave the Knights roster a piece of his mind, calling their actions classless while shaking their hands.
“We don’t do that because when you do those kinds of things, it looks very classless and it also looks like you would just hoping to win,” Terry said. We never go into games trying to hope to win. We go into games expecting to win. So we don’t act like that. We expect to win, we don’t jump up and down like we won a national championship.
“We don’t step on anyone’s home court deal in that crazy trying to show them up in any way. We don’t do that. So that’s what I was angry about.”
The Longhorns were out-rebounded by the Knights 37-22 — including 12 offensive boards compared the Texas’ four. UCF logged five blocks as a team, which helped the Big 12 newcomer outscore Texas 34-22 in the paint.
