Rodney Terry explains starting Chendall Weaver vs. TCU
On the heels of a two-game losing streak, Texas thought it could shake things up by making a lineup change and inserting guard Chendall Weaver into the starting lineup.
So Weaver started the team’s game against TCU on Saturday. Things went well, as Texas snapped its two-game skid with a 77-66 win.
“Chendall’s been in a starter’s role all year,” coach Rodney Terry said after the game. “He plays winning basketball, big-time competitor. He’s earned the opportunity, the right to start games for us.”
During the game, Weaver got involved early and often and began to make his presence felt. He did it in a number of different ways, contributing across the board to the bottom line.
When the game finished he had logged seven points, four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. And again, and perhaps most importantly, Texas got the win.
Chendall Weaver seemed to have cemented his spot in the starting lineup for at least a few more games.
“He’s always in the game at closing time for us, but he’s earned the right to have an opportunity to be out there when the game starts,” Terry said. “Every guy understood that. They understood that and they accepted that and I thought embraced that.”

Texas would continue working with Weaver as a starter in Tuesday night’s contest against Iowa State. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, they weren’t quite as successful, falling 70-65.
Chendall Weaver was solid enough, scoring five points, pulling down seven rebounds, and recording one block in the game. He did have four fouls and was more limited, seeing just 19 minutes of action.
Still, he figures to be key component for the Longhorns going forward. On the season Weaver has averaged 4.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, while he’s also good for the occasional block, steal or assist.
Texas will return home for a date with West Virginia on Saturday. That game will tip off at 3 p.m. ET with a broadcast on the Longhorn Network.
