On Monday night, Texas traveled to Kansas for a key game with the Jayhawks. Rodney Terry and his Longhorns played well but came up short in the end despite a great effort. One player who Texas managed to shut down was Jalen Wilson, a forward for Kansas, who only managed to score two points. After the game, Terry explained how Texas was able to take Wilson out of the game.

“Well, it was by committee,” Rodney Terry said. “No one guy is gonna shut the guy out who’s having a terrific year this year.”

This season, Wilson is averaging 20.7 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game. So, Texas shutting him down is, in many ways, remarkable.

“He’s an all-league performer to this point right now, but we were really trying to limit his touches, and then make him work on the other end as well. It’s what you have to do with guys who really score the ball at a high clip. You’ve got to make them work on both ends of the floor. You can’t just let those guys come in and have a great offensive night and not have them work on the defensive side of the ball. I thought we did that.” Terry said.

“He got in foul trouble a little bit. But, the supporting cast again came in and played well. Again, they were challenged by the Hall of Fame coach to do that and they responded well.”

Rodney Terry defended Tyrese Hunter

One player who struggled for Texas in the game against Kansas was Tyrese Hunter. After the game, Rodney Terry defended Hunter’s play.

“At the end of the day, Tyrese is going to be a steady guy for us in terms of … we don’t need Tyrese to go win the game for us,” Terry said.

“Tyrese is the point guard and his job is to make guys around him better. I thought he made some really good decisions in terms of being aggressive and trying to attack the basket as well and create for his teammates. But at the end of the day, a point guard’s job is to try and run the team and try to make guys around him better and try to win the game. That’s where you’re measured as a point guard. I don’t get caught up in how much Tyrese scores.”
