During the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, the Texas Longhorns got two wins to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. This came after a long season of distractions that saw Rodney Terry take over as the team’s interim head coach after Chris Beard was fired.
Now, Terry has taken to Twitter to share a heartfelt message about this Longhorns’ team.
“I believe in this team and am so proud of them,” Rodney Terry tweeted. “40 more minutes, see you guys in Kansas City! Retweet if you’re with us. #HookEm.”
Along with the message, Terry showed a couple of photographs of the Longhorns celebrating their wins, which came fairly easily against Colgate and then in a tough one against Penn State. Next, Texas plays Xavier, against whom the Longhorns are currently a 4.5-point favorite.
Rodney Terry is still just the interim head coach at Texas. That’s despite winning the Big 12 Tournament and making the Sweet Sixteen. It’s also because Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte wants to make a splashy hire. Still, he may have no choice but to give Terry the job.
Before the NCAA Tournament, Jeff Goodman reported, “They’re going to swing for some of the big boys, if they don’t hire Rodney Terry. If Rodney Terry goes deep, they’re going to have to give it to Rodney Terry. They don’t want to. Chris Del Conte doesn’t want to ultimately. But he may have no choice if Rodney Terry goes deep, second weekend or beyond. If not, they’re going to try to swing for the fences.”

However, Goodman also reported that Scott Drew and Kelvin Sampson both don’t want the job, limiting the pool of big name candidates.
For his part, Terry was a longtime assistant at Texas before becoming a head coach at Fresno State and later UTEP, where he made the NCAA Tournament once during 10 seasons at the two mid-major programs.
Rodney Terry says Texas is back
After making it to the Sweet Sixteen, Rodney Terry explained that Texas is back where it belongs.
“We’re back in the Sweet 16 where we belong,” Terry said. “Texas is back where we need to be and we’re excited about more.”
The legendary Dick Vitale believes this is just the start for Texas, though. He predicted that Texas is going to the Final Four, where the Longhorns will beat Gonzaga. Then, Texas will play Alabama in the national championship game.
