Scottie Scheffler shares hilarious reaction to Masters 18th hole drama
Scottie Scheffler shared his hilarious reaction to officials on the course searching for his errant drive on the 18th hole. After seeing his ball veer off into the trees from the tee, Scheffler could see Masters Tournament officials searching for his ball in the distance and knew that it was a bad scenario.
Scottie Scheffler’s reaction to errant 18th hole drive
With a four-stroke lead in the third round coming into the final hole, Scheffler’s drive shot found the trees along the fairway and led to a drop-penalty that he was able to recover from beautifully. If nerves were a factor at all during the time it took for him to find his ball and make his next shot, they didn’t show on the course.
Afterwards, however, Scheffler shared his version of events and how nervous it made him before he saw where the ball went.
“We saw the guy with the flag who finds the ball kind of panicking and we were like, ‘Oh crap.'”
From his perspective at the tee, Scheffler had no idea where his ball had ultimately landed. Although he knew it was off the course, the only thing he knew for sure at the time was that the ball-spotters on the course were unable to find it and that he had made a huge mistake before ending his day.

Ultimately, the shot resulted in a simple penalty of one stroke as Scheffler took the drop — a situation that would have been much worse if not for his incredible shot to approach the green. As he finally found a suitable lie for his drop, the leader throughout the Masters showed a level of adaptability that has enabled him to thrive on a difficult course. His approach shot came within 10 feet of the pin as it rolled past the green, setting up a very simple chip shot and putt for bogey. Scheffler finished the third round one-under par, his worst day at the Masters but still good enough to preserve his lead.
Sunday pairings feature Scheffler vs. Smith
After the drama on the final hole of the day, Scheffler enters Sunday with a three-stroke lead ahead of Cameron Smith. The former Texas Longhorn’s final bogey gave him five on the day, but his six birdies in the third round kept him in the red and with a lead. Smith finished his day four-under par on a difficult day for the entire field, putting him in striking distance of Scheffler — who seemed to be building an incredible stroke lead to begin his day.
Scheffler finished the 18th hole and kept his composure throughout, avoiding a disastrous finish to the day. Sunday’s finish will feature Scheffler and Smith both paired for the final round as they battle. Scheffler is currently the world’s number one ranked golfer, while Smith finished tied for second place at the Masters in 2020.
