Texas was one of the best kickoff return defense teams in the country last season. Special teams coordinator Jeff Banks saw his unit allow just under 17 yards per return, good enough for No. 22 in the country. Texas Tech was the only coverage unit better in the Big 12.

If it were up to Banks, you would watch teams initiate a return on every single kickoff. He is confident in Texas’ special teams group. More times than not, opposing returners wound up getting tackled inside of the 20-yard line and even took a lick along the way.

“On the kickoff portion, I want them to return every ball,” Banks said. “The way we covered last year, return every ball. When I go to this meeting tonight and they show some of the kickoff stuff, that group is going to take the field Wednesday at practice or they’re going to take the field the first game against Rice and they’re going to think they’re tackling someone extremely physical inside the 20. The tape proves it from last year.”

Banks went on to retract his words a bit, saying there will be a time when Texas tries to boot one through the back of the endzone. Situational football is something Steve Sarkisian is looking to improve upon this season and kickoff return defense can definitely be a part of that.

“There is a time and a place where I don’t want there to be a play,” Banks said. “So ahead, drive it out, and let’s move on. Whenever that is… But certainly, I don’t mind if they return it right now with the group I have coming back.”

The numbers from last season were great for Texas. But Banks sees the 2023 season as a fresh start, wanting the coverage team to prove they can replicate the success. There is no guarantee the results are as good this year because of the following accomplishments.

“What I am going to preach is that doesn’t count,” Banks said. “What we did last year doesn’t count for kickoff coverage for this year. I want them to return them all.”

As Banks mentioned, Texas will begin the season against Rice on Sept. 2. From the first kickoff of the season to the final one against Texas Tech on Black Friday, Banks is going to have his guys ready to get down the field and give the Texas defense good field position.
