Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers has played inconsistently in his two games since returning from an injury. However, head coach Steve Sarkisian doesn’t think the injury is having an impact on his play.

Sarkisian addressed Ewers’ health during his press conference on Monday. There, he emphasized that everyone is banged up but that he feels confident that Ewers is healthy enough to play and play at the level he needs to for Texas.

“I don’t think it’s impacting him at all,” Steve Sarkisian said. “I really think he’s healthy and feels good about it. Is he 100 percent? I don’t know. Is anybody on our team 100 percent going into Week 8? Probably not. Everybody’s got something right now.”

Quinn Ewers was initially injured in the game against UTSA. It was later described as an abdominal injury and it cost him the next two games. Backup Arch Manning took over for him during the time he was out with an injury.

Since Ewers returned from his injury, Texas is 1-1, taking care of business against Oklahoma before losing to Georgia. Over the course of those two games, Ewers has completed 55 of 72 passes for 410 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He’s also rushed for -31 yards, largely due to the sacks and consistent pressure that came in the Georgia game. In each of the games since he’s returned to action the offense got off to slow starts, not scoring any first quarter points.

Late in the second quarter of the Georgia game, Steve Sarkisian benched Quinn Ewers for backup quarterback Arch Manning. However, Ewers returned for the second half. Sarkisian later shared his reasoning behind the move.

“I had to make a decision for what I felt was best for the team in that moment but also best for him in that moment. And sometimes the players don’t always see that, but I think when he takes a step back and looks at it, he’ll understand I was trying to do what was in the best interest of him, to get him kind of recalibrated and reset to go play the second half,” Sarkisian said.

“I think he will acknowledge the coaching. He’s definitely been coachable with us. And I think he’s got a lot of good football ahead of him this season…I just didn’t think he was at his best. A lot of the things that I’ve seen him do, I wasn’t quite seeing. I didn’t think his eyes were where they needed to be, and so that’s why I felt like he just needed to kind of reset and regroup at halftime. … I thought he competed his tail off in the second half.”

Steve Sarkisian has reiterated that Quinn Ewers is the team’s starter moving forward. It will be on his shoulders to take the Longhorns into Nashville and take on the Vanderbilt Commodores next week.
