Quinn Ewers did not play his best game this weekend against Oklahoma State. Texas had an 11-point lead in the second quarter, but the freshman made a handful of mistakes and was inefficient throughout to the point where the Cowboys were able to come back and win 41-34 in Stillwater. With that said, Steve Sarkisian says his confidence never wavered in his young quarterback.

Sarkisian spoke about Ewers’ lackluster performance during his press conference on Monday. He says he didn’t think about inserting backup Hudson Card and elected to continue on with Ewers. While it does fall on Ewers to play better, though, Sarkisian says everybody on the offense owns a percentage of the fault.

“I didn’t consider (Card) very strongly in the game. Obviously the quarterback position gets way too much credit when things go good and gets way too much blame when things don’t go good,” said Sarkisian. “Would I have liked more precision in the passing game? Does some of that responsibility fall on him? Yes. Some of that responsibility falls on me. Some of it falls on the receivers, some of it falls on the line, the running backs. Everybody has to assume their own responsibility in that.”

Ewers completed just 38.8% of his passes and threw three interceptions. He did throw for a career-high 319 yards as well as for two touchdowns. However, based on the other numbers, it was the worst game of his young career.

Through it all, Sarkisian wants to continue to instill confidence in Ewers. The loss was still just the former five-star’s fourth full college game. In the end, it’s all part of the growing pains of being a player at this level. That’s why Sarkisian is hoping Ewers will be ready to bounce back in two weeks against Kansas State.

“There’s definitely room for growth. He’s still a young player for us but he’s got a bright future ahead of him,” said Sarkisian. “Hopefully we can clear up some of the issues that we had this week so that, going into next week, he’s back to razor sharp.”
