Jett Bush is a veteran leader for Texas at the linebacker position. This offseason, Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff moved him back to a more traditional linebacker role. It’s actually the same role that he played in high school.

“I think it’s been good for him,” Steve Sarkisian said. “We just, again, retooling just where people are defensively for us. To get Jett back into, kind of I think his comfort zone. I felt like, at times, a year ago he almost got swallowed up a little bit when he was on the line of scrimmage and I think he can just be a little bit more effective off the ball.”

“He is an instinctive guy, and that’s what that position requires. It requires instincts. He’s obviously very tough. And, he provides a lot for us, I think, and will provide a lot for us on special teams.”

Jett Bush is a former three-star recruit in the Class of 2019. He’s part of a linebacking group that needs to step up for Texas in 2022. The program is trying to correct defensive issues that they’ve been plagued with in recent seasons. Steve Sarkisian knows this, and the move back to a traditional linebacker role for Jett Bush is an attempt to address the issue.

Steve Sarkisian is working to improve the Texas defense

During his career, Steve Sarkisian has been a great offensive coach. But he knows the defense needs to be addressed. He’s made a few unique moves to do this, like hiring Gary Patterson as an assistant. He’s also shaking up defensive roles for players like Jett Bush.

Steve Sarkisian has publicly reflected on the evaluation of the Texas defense and what he needs to see from them.

“But I think bigger picture, broad scope is how do we keep that level of consistency because we show these stretches in game where we play really well. But we can’t let one drive or one play all of a sudden dictate our behavior and our morale and things all drop, we’ve got to be able to pick it right back up and get back on the field because last time I checked I didn’t see a team go twelve games and not give up a touchdown. We’re going to have to be able to respond to some of the adversity that we get faced with,” Steve Sarkisian said.
