After almost a year since he transferred home to Texas, Quinn Ewers finally made his debut as a Longhorn. He was effective in Texas’ 52-10 victory over UL-Monroe in their opener. After watching over the film, Steve Sarkisian says he couldn’t be much happier with his freshman QB’s debut.

Sarkisian broke down Ewers’ first game with the media during his press conference on Monday. He said, while he would have liked to see more accuracy going long, he thought Ewers was on point when hitting the right targets at the right moments.

“I thought he played pretty well. Very rarely did I feel like the ball is not going to the right spot or to the right person,” said Sarkisian. “I think some of the throws on the balls he’d love to have back just from an accuracy standpoint. He’ll fix it. Sometimes you just need to get that full speed rep of guys running down the field of what that feels like.”

Ewers finished the game with a 66.7% completion percentage for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw an interception early, but Sarkisian says he was pleased to see the former top QB prospect play through it.

Sarkisian’s greatest overall takeaway from Ewers’ first start was his progressions. In pressure situations during the game, Ewers went through all his reads and converted on several late downs. That’s the player Sarkisian loves to see under center for the Longhorns.

“What I love is that on some critical third and fourth downs? He got to Gunnar Helm fourth on his progression on a conversion. To JT Sanders where he was the third read on the progression,” Sarkisian said. “Those are some real positives to me that he’s working himself through.”

With several offensive weapons at his disposal, Steve Sarkisian only has to teach his young quarterback in order to improve Texas’ offense. Quinn Ewers has all the talent as a player and has the targets to succeed in Sarkisian’s offense. Once he can get his deep ball down, Sarkisian believes the sky’s the limit for Ewers and the Longhorn offense.

“I think ultimately, for his growth and our growth as an offense, our vertical passing game has got to come to life. I believe it will. It never hasn’t in our system.”
