Texas is a more veteran team in Steve Sarkisian’s second season with the Longhorns. And one benefit to the extra age across the roster is better leadership. Most of these guys were around last year, but with another year of college ball and some experience under Sarkisian under their belt, the Texas head coach is noticing more leaders stepping up.
It’s not just the stars, either. Several voices not belonging to Bijan Robinson have stepped up as leaders. Obviously, Robinson is a big part of the leadership too, but some younger guys have really come through to help lead a change in culture within the football program.
At his press conference this week, Sarkisian pointed out some particular names who he has seen take a step up in that department. Take a read below at some players, especially on the offensive side of the football, who have rounded out their leadership qualities this season.
Steve Sarkisian names players who have stepped up as leaders
“You know, I think throughout this process of growth over the last two years and then even into this season, a guy who to me has really stepped up as a leader has been JT Sanders. He’s a true sophomore. You really see his development from a leadership perspective starting to come out. I thought that that’s been really impressive.

“I think Keilan Robinson has been another guy. You know, he was new to the program a year ago. He’s in it. Obviously, it’s a great room with with Bijan and Roschon Johnson. I think his leadership has definitely kind of stepped up in a different manner, which has been positive. And I think that’s great for all parties involved.
“And then the third one I would say Ryan Watts. Again, transfer, you know, he’s kind of now getting through his first season. I think his leadership is starting to show.
“So yeah, I know the the usual guys which we we talk about a lot. But those three kind of stand out, just off the top of my head, of guys that are really starting to step up and are just finding their niche in the program.”
