Steve Sarkisian shares progress update of young tight end room
As Steve Sarkisian gets ready for year two at Texas, he has to develop a young tight end room. He addressed their progress through spring ball this week.
The Longhorns have three sophomore tight ends on the roster, and another — Patrick Bayouth — who’s transitioning to the position after playing on the defensive line last season. Sarkisian said he’s seen some promising signs from his youthful group, but admitted they’re not where he wants them to be yet. But that’s alright considering they’re still getting acquainted, and it’s now on the coaches to help them grow as the season approaches.
“I think from practice one through practice four, I would say Gunnar Helm and [Ja’Tavion] Sanders have both kind of incrementally improved,” Sarkisian said. “That’s a positive. The one thing is they’re not where we want them yet, and that’s a good thing. Knowing that we’re making progress but we’re not exactly where we’re at yet. They’re both very talented guys, receivers, natural route-runners, catching the ball. … I think it’s been helpful to get pads on. The idea is when there’s issues that come up, are we making the strides next practice? That’s what I’ve got to look at the tape for. I felt like there were a couple plays today we could’ve been better at that spot.
“Obviously, Jahleel [Billingsley] is a real threat in the passing game. He’s a much more physical player than people would probably think and give him credit for. With Jahleel, it’s all about … playing at a consistent level. And that’s our job as coaches to try to get him to do that.”

Steve Sarkisian updates injured tight ends
Even as he and tight ends coach Jeff Banks develop the young tight ends, Sarkisian noted some injuries. He provided an update on two injured players during the press conference, and addressed the progress Bayouth is making. Bayouth was recruited as an EDGE, but is switching to the offensive side of the ball for the Longhorns.
“Juan [Davis] has still been out, so hopefully we can get him back sooner rather than later,” Sarkisian said. “[Brayden] Liebrock is somewhat limited coming off the shoulder, but again, kind of positive in his progression.
“Honestly, I think Bayouth’s been a nice addition at tight end. He’s a big, physical guy. Obviously, he’s new to the position, he’s four practices in. But he’s showing some signs where I think he can help us.”
