Steve Sarkisian puts on golden hat mid-interview, hands off to Quinn Ewers
Steve Sarkisian finds himself a winner from the Cotton Bowl for a second time, taking down Oklahoma 34-3 on Saturday. Texas started rough but composed itself offensively and turned the performance into a big-time victory. The Golden Hat will be heading back to Austin after a one-year absence.
During his postgame on-field interview, Sarkisian was presented with the trophy and encouraged by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge to put it on. The head coach obliged and was the first person for Texas to wear the Golden Hat, with Rutledge saying “It fits great.”
Sarkisian was then asked about his quarterback, Quinn Ewers, and his play against Oklahoma. Ewers was fresh off an injury and playing for the first time in nearly a month. A rocky start eventually smoothed out as the third-year starter settled in quite nicely in Sarkisian’s eyes.
“When you wait that long to play, about a month off, there’s a little bit of rust,” Sarkisian said. “But I thought settled in and made some really competitive plays, especially on the third down.”

As Sarkisian wrapped up his interview, Holly Rowe was standing by with Ewers not too far away. In the middle of his first answer, Ewers got the Golden Hat from Sarkisian and put it on himself. A moment was then shared between the two before Sarkisian went to celebrate with the rest of the team.
Ewers then spoke on how proud he was of Texas for performing well in what is the team’s biggest rivalry game of the season. He had to watch Oklahoma celebrate with the Golden Hat last season and is glad to finally have it back in his possession.
“It feels good to finally have it back,” Ewers said. “Couldn’t be more proud of the guys and all the hard work we put in. It’s good to finally get back out on the field with my guys. I missed two games. I didn’t play the way I fully wanted to but I think, overall, the way that we play football — that’s what gives us chances to win games, the complimentary football we do play as a whole.”
