Media Days kicked off the new Big 12 football season last week. And one of the biggest topics of the entire offseason was the developments at the quarterback position for Texas. Of course, they signed Arch Manning in the 2023 recruiting class and added former five-star Quinn Ewers from Ohio State through the Transfer Portal. So Steve Sarkisian has a lot of talent at his disposal at the titular position in football over the coming years.

However, at Media Days, he got to address the immediate future of the position for the Longhorns. Here was what he said about the QB competition for the season that’s starting in a few weeks.

“I think we’re in a really good position. The guys, the local guys that cover us on a daily basis, I think you know the value I place on the quarterback position. My humble opinion, it’s the most important position in sports for a lot of reasons.

I think the more quality players you can have in that room for the healthy competition, to push one another, to prepare themselves for their future but also the short-term future of playing a season is vitally important”

Though only one guy will ultimately start game one, Sarkisian likes having a plethora of options.

“We have a unique luxury of having Hudson Card, Quinn Ewers, Maalik Murphy. Those guys are all quality players. The beauty of the summer is we’ve been around these guys all summer long and been able to be on the field with them with skill development, to see some of the growth that they could make from spring ball into summer. No, we haven’t made a decision yet, but I don’t think it’ll take quite as long as maybe last fall took us.

“We’ll see. Time will tell. But I’ve been really impressed with both these guys in Hudson and Quinn and the work that they’ve done to prepare themselves.”

Steve Sarkisian also praised how the two have developed as leaders.

“And I think they’ve earned a lot of respect from their teammates, which is the most important thing, but they’ve definitely got the respect of myself, Coach Milwee, our entire coaching staff, and I think we’re going to be in good hands.”
