Texas football is still in the hunt for a Big 12 Championship appearance. TCU currently has the inside track with their undefeated record and will be taking a spot in the title game barring some unexpected debacle. But the Longhorns have a shot make the game along with them. The road to playing in that game starts by taking care of business in the one just ahead against Kansas State.
That’s the attitude head coach Steve Sarkisian wants the Longhorns to have. Before worrying about a possible conference title, Texas has to win its way there, one game at a time. He spoke at length this week about maintaining focus on the game immediately ahead rather than ever worrying about games later in the year, and said that this year’s team is doing a spectacular job of doing just that.
“Well I think I think the biggest thing that we try to do, you know — like I’ve said, I’ve been fortunate to be on some pretty good teams, be part of some pretty good teams and programs. And I think the challenge is not to focus on December 3rd. It’s to focus on this week and not get caught looking down the road, but give this week all of the attention that it deserves.”
Per Sark, that’s the mindset of championship-level teams. “I think that’s what the best teams do. They focus on the task at hand, they focus on what’s right in front of them,” he said. Then credited his team for adopting that frame of mind throughout this season.

“I think that our team is doing that really well right now. Don’t think they’re worried about what the outcome or the results will be a month from now or so. I think they’re focused on playing a really good football team on the road Saturday night. And what’s going to be needed to go in there and get a win. That’s where their focus is. I don’t I really think it’s down the road, and that’s a credit to them. I think we’ve got some great leaders that have really bought into that. And have been the ones that have been the catalyst kind of pushing that message.”
Strong leadership up and down the roster with a team that’s all on the same page and merely focused on the week ahead. Steve Sarkisian and Texas are building towards their goal, but only one game at a time.
