Steve Sarkisian’s journey as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns is about to take off. Prior to the team’s opening game against Louisiana, Sarkisian revealed talks he’s had with his parents leading up to his debut.

“I talked to them a couple of days ago actually. I try to check in about once a week. The one thing about my parents is I’m still their baby,” said Sarkisian. “I know that’s crazy to think, but I still am.

“The reality of it is that it’s just all support, it’s all love. I think they’re excited. They definitely read more of what you guys write than what I read, I’ll tell you that. They give me all the updates on that.”

In addition, Sarkisian mentions that while his parents won’t be in the stands, they’ll still be invested in the game as ever. Moreover, his mom may even have some choice words for her son.

“They’re just super supportive,” said Sarkisian. “Obviously, they’re getting older in age. It would be great for them to be here Saturday, but I know they’ll be tuned in and watching.

“My mom will probably want to watch it by herself and nobody around. She might not have the most choice words for me, or the refs or the other team, whatever else – but that’s just a mom being a mom. That’s what parents are.”

If Sarkisian’s Longhorns don’t perform in his debut, his mother won’t be the only one with choice words for the head coach. However, Sarkisian believes his decision at the quarterback position will help Texas accomplish their goal of victory.

Sarkisian names Hudson Card starting QB

While Steve Sarkisian may have named Hudson Card his starting quarterback, he said something interesting about Casey Thompson that’ll make ears perk all around Texas.

“Hudson Card is going to start Saturday against Lousiana,” Sarkisian clarified. “Casey [Thompson] will play in the game, and then we will continue to evaluate from there. But that’s the direction we’re going to go in this weekend.”

While Card may be the current starter for Texas, Sarkisian made it clear that there was still room for Thompson in their offense. Sarkisian explained that both quarterbacks have earned his attention and each other’s respect in the locker room.

“I told Hudson and Casey, this is really not a knock on Casey. Both guys really started to perform very well after that first scrimmage. It was a tough call, but I think in general you try to make the best decision for the program at that time.”

It’s an unorthodox system, but Steve Sarkisian hopes it’s one that works. If it doesn’t, his parents will be sure to let him know.
