Steve Sarkisian says Texas' victory over Alabama is 'the best win in the country right now'
Ahead of Halloween’s inaugural 2023 College Football Playoff rankings reveal, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian wants to make sure committee members understand just how impressive the Longhorns’ resume is.
According to Inside Texas, when speaking to the media this week following his team’s 35-6 home beatdown of BYU, Sarkisian staked the claim that Texas has the best win in the country. That win: a 10-point victory in Tuscaloosa over Alabama — an accomplishment that belongs solely to the Longhorns in the entire 2020s decade so far.
“I’d argue we have the best win in the country right now,” said Sarkisian. “The fact that we went into Tuscaloosa, Alabama and beat a team that was 52-1 in the previous 53 games going in there.”
Sarkisian even dogged Texas’ future league, the SEC, a little bit, noting that no team in that conference has been able to overcome Alabama on the road or at home. Meanwhile, his team did it and even won by two possessions.
“I hear so much about how tough the SEC is, but I haven’t seen any of those teams go into Alabama and win either.”

Such a trend has the Texas head coach feeling terrific about where his team sits at the moment in the CFP race. Sure, the Longhorns are certainly going to be ranked outside of the top four and maybe even the top six. But that doesn’t really matter, since Texas will absolutely make the field if they win out and have that win over ‘Bama.
“I feel pretty good about our team and I think over time this whole thing will play itself out. We’ve got to focus on what we need to do Saturday and play our best football.”
The No. 25 Kansas State Wildcats are the toughest remaining opponent on the schedule for Texas, who welcomes KSU to Austin for a massive tilt in the Big 12 title race. Win that one and take care of business in the following two road games vs. Texas Tech and Iowa State, and Steve Sarkisian’s group will waltz into the Big 12 championship to likely rematch Oklahoma with all the marbles on the line: not only a conference crown, but more importantly, a bid to the CFP.
It’s getting to that time of year, folks, where it’s time to start sifting through resumes and figure out just where each of the top teams stand with just a handful of weeks to go in the regular season.
