Steve Sarkisian shares his message to Hudson Card following Texas quarterback competition
Steve Sarkisian, the Texas Longhorns coach, finally named Quinn Ewers as the team’s starting quarterback. That means that Hudson Card, who had significant playing time in 2021, will start the year as a backup.
While speaking to the media, Steve Sarkisian explained how he broke the news to Hudson Card and the message that he gave him.
“It goes without saying, but sometimes when you’re put in that position and you’re in a really contested battle, and the other guy gets named the starter, you can lose sight of potential opportunities and things that are in front of you,” Steve Sarkisian said.

“We did make that point to Hudson,” Steve Sarkisian emphasized. “And made that very clear, you know. Hudson’s job is to compete still, every day. And to either make Quinn better or pass him, and I expect nothing less of Hudson than to do that.”
Steve Sarkisian is addressing the reality of modern college football. In part, this means quarterbacks transfer when they lose starting jobs. On the other hand, they sometimes do this and miss out on opportunities due to injuries or poor play ahead of them. So, it’s an important decision whether or not to transfer.

“The reality of it is, playing quarterback this day and age, it’s hard to go through an entire season unscathed…you’ve got to be prepared because the worst thing that can happen to you is (to have) your number get called and you’re not prepared.”
Steve Sarkisian explained the decision to start Quinn Ewers
The decision to start Quinn Ewers made sense to a lot of people, given the raw talent that he brings to the table. At the same time, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion. He still needed to beat the more experienced Hudson Card. It’s a decision that Steve Sarkisian explained.
“I think Quinn provides the ability to make all the throws in our system,” said Steve Sarkisian. “I think he’s got playmaking ability and he’s got a natural passing ability…I’m excited for (Ewers) and I’m excited for our team. Quinn can make all the throws. I feel very comfortable about that and I feel comfortable about his playmaking ability. His growth in the system has been one where we can really kind of see where it’s going to head under him. I’m excited about it.”
