Following a tough loss to Oklahoma State, Texas had a bye week to regroup. Redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, in particular, needed to find a way to bounce back against Kansas State following a performance where he failed to complete more than 50% of his passes and had three interceptions. Now, head coach Steve Sarkisian needs to find a way to make sure he’s still confident.

While speaking to the media, Steve Sarkisian was asked about poor performances he had while playing in college and what he learned from that opportunity, given the context of Ewers’ rough outing.

“I do,” Steve Sarkisian replied. “My junior year, we were playing Utah at home, big game. I threw three picks in the first half. I threw another one in the second half.”

“They booed my mom out of the stadium,” Steve Sarkisian grinned. “No. She left because they were booing me so bad. It’s a tough day, you know?”

Steve Sarkisian played quarterback at BYU in the mid-1990s. For anyone who knows the importance of the BYU-Utah Holy War, they know how big a deal it is to have a performance like that. However, as Sarkisian explained, he found a way to bounce back from that.

“Then I turned around the next week and went and played Fresno State for a conference championship, and went 31-34 for 400 yards and broke an NCAA record. So, one game should never define us. You got to get back to work. You got to get back on the horse and you got to start riding again.”

The hope for Texas is that those conversations that Steve Sarkisian had with Quinn Ewers and a bye week to help with preparation will help Ewers to have a bounce-back performance in a key game against Kansas State.

Steve Sarkisian on what the Kansas State game means

The Texas Longhorns can become bowl eligible with a win on Saturday. It won’t be easy to do that, though, as Kansas State has been one of the toughest teams in the Big 12 this season. Winning it would mean a ton for Texas, as Steve Sarkisian explained.

“This is a heck of a challenge. This is a good team. We’re going on the road for a great environment for college football at night. I think the opportunity for us is to show the resolve, the resiliency, the togetherness that we have,” Steve Sarkisian said.

“I think that it’s to show the team that we are, the capability that we have. We have really good players. I think that we’ve put together a really good game plan.”
