Steve Sarkisian talks about current state of the Texas quarterback room
There’s an old saying that goes, ‘If you’ve got two quarterbacks, you have none.’ It means that a team needs to know who its quarterback is and let them run the team. It’s also a problem that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian could potentially be dealing with.
That’s because Texas has two quarterbacks with massive potential — Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. In terms of raw talent, this is probably the best quarterback room in the country. However, it’s also a young room that needs to develop to meet its potential.
Now, Sarkisian has given an update about the current state of the quarterback room.
“They’re all doing well,” Steve Sarkisian said. “They’re all doing a nice job, they’re all working on their craft. Everybody’s at a different stage of their progress, but we coach them hard. We have high expectations for that room, and, in the end, they have had days that are better than others, but that’s part of the process.”
Steve Sarkisian emphasized that he’s confident with the quarterback room beyond Manning and Ewers, speaking incredibly highly of redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy.
“And, so, I feel very comfortable with the stage that they’re in, and the growth that they’re in, and I feel very good about the room that we have. Some people may think, well, we’ve got one guy. Well, I feel like we’ve got three really quality players. Quinn, naturally, is kind of a step ahead of everybody with his experience that he has. I think that we’re now getting a full dose of Maalik, feel good about him. And, I think Arch, you know 13 practices into college football, is performing well. So, all that, I feel very comfortable about where we’re at. I feel good about it.”
Fans are soon going to have the opportunity to see these quarterbacks compete during the Texas Spring Game. After that, the group will work on improving and competing ahead of the 2023 regular season.

“They, like the other guys on the team, are not finished products. They have work to do and this is going to be a big summer for them and then, ultimately, a big fall camp to get themselves ready for the season.”
Eli Manning detailed the excitement for Arch at practice
Beyond his own obvious talent, part of why there is so much excitement around Arch Manning comes down to his family. He has a massive legacy to live up to. As practice gets going for Arch, Eli Manning is hoping to be a resource to his nephew.
“I think we’re just excited for him. He’s already at Texas right now going through spring ball and, and, you know, I want to be a resource for him. But I’d never be the guy to say ‘hey you got to be doing this, you got to be doing that some of it.’ You got to learn on the run. You got to just go in there, go to be a freshman in college, figure things out, figure out your schedule,” Eli Manning said.
“But whenever we get together and get to see him in the summertime, get to see him at different times throughout the year and you know, we always kind of set an hour or 30 minutes or we happen to be sitting there, you know, eating lunch and we pick his brain.”
