Steve Sarkisian has a lot of confidence in his quarterback room, as Texas is boasting a talented competition between incumbent starting quarterback Hudson Card and prized Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers in advance of the 2022 season.

Speaking with the ESPN crew at Big 12 Media Days, Sarkisian updated the college football world on the ongoing quarterback competition between the two talented signal-callers.

“I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to be around some pretty good ones. I’ve come to realize it’s the most important position in sports. So, you try to get as many as you can in that room that can play at a high level, so it’s not just a one time thing. You can sustain it for years and years. We’re in a great situation right now. We’ve got a heck of a room. They work hard and work well together. They love competing with one another. But they love pushing the other guy, and pumping the other guy up when his opportunities come.

“Quinn and Hudson are in a great battle right now. Hudson has got a little bit more experience, and has been in the system for a year. His confidence level is really high, and I’m excited for him. Quinn is a very talented young man. Extremely coachable, great teammate.

“So, I love where we’re at. I think inevitably at some point in the season, we’re going to need both those guys to help us win a championship. But we’ll find out who it’s going to be in Week 1, and we’ll go from there.”

Evidently, Steve Sarkisian believes both Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers are essential to the success of the Longhorns for 2022. However, only one quarterback can be named their starter for the beginning of the season — but don’t expect it to take as long as it did last offseason.

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but won’t take as long as last fall (to name a starter),” Sarkisian told Brett McMurphy of The Action Network.

Moreover, Steve Sarkisian continues to sing the same tune as it pertains to the Texas quarterback battle, as he isn’t giving anything away. During the Longhorns’ spring practices earlier this year, Sarkisian broke down the performances of both players.

“I think two things that have stood out to me, in both scrimmages that we’ve had thus far, both guys have played really well,” said Sarkisian. “I’ve been very impressed with their playmaking ability, their ability to take their shots. Not that every throw is perfect, but they’ve been really effective on third down. Both guys have used their legs well.

“I think Hudson, naturally some of the game management things come really natural to him just having been doing it with us. I think Quinn is a very quick study. There’s things that come to him that are new or a situational thing that comes to him that is new. But he really takes the coaching and tries to apply it the next time out. And I think both guys have really earned a lot of respect of their teammates in their approach to their preparation and then ultimately their ability to execute.”

Continuing, Sarkisian wrapped up the conversation by evaluating where the battle is heading into the break before summer workouts and the fall season.

“In the end, from where that position is today from where we were a year ago, I’m really pleased,” said Sarkisian. “I just think we’re at a place right now where we’re playing very good football at that position.”
