Steve Sarkisian visits Texas QB commit Maalik Murphy
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee went on a visit Monday to Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra four-star quarterback and Longhorns commit Maalik Murphy.
Murphy is the No. 148 overall player and No. 11 quarterback in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Murphy just finished his high school career by winning the CIFSS South Section Division III title when Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra beat Apple Valley 31-3. Murphy suffered a broken collarbone but returned for the final seven games of the season. He tossed 11 touchdowns in those last seven games.

“I’m ready to bring an ultimate competitor and vocal leader to the locker room and help in any way possible,” Murphy said.
His performance down the stretch caught the idea of Justin Wells of Inside Texas, who had high praise for his development.
“It’s not just that Murphy’s numbers have significantly improved for Serra. The 6-foot-6 passer has started to look more comfortable hanging in the pocket on late-developing routes and overall is processing the game at a much higher level,” Wells said. “Another positive for Murphy’s deep playoff run is that Maalik has gotten crucial reps and much needed game time in high-pressure situations. Murphy did not play much his sophomore year and California’s makeshift spring season due to COVID was hard to evaluate.”
