Steve Sarkisian: With UTSA, Texas players don't need to be reminded of Texas A&M, Notre Dame upsets
The Texas Longhorns came up one point shy of upsetting the then-top team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide, on Saturday. Now, after that emotional game, they must turn their attention down South to their sister school in San Antonio, UTSA. With the Roadrunners program on the rise, Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian is well aware of their capabilities and is cautious not to make the same mistake Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M made. And according to the Texas headman, it all starts with respect.
“The easy thing for us is we got a great deal of respect for UTSA. I can’t speak for the other schools that stubbed their toes in those ball games.”
Since their inaugural season in 2011, UTSA has been a program on the rise, with last season being their best to date. The Roadrunners finished last season 12-1, winning the Conference USA title. However, they did lose to San Diego State in the Frisco Bowl to end the year. This season UTSA lost a heartbreaker to start the year against the Houston Cougars in overtime. But followed that up with an overtime victory over Army in Week 2.

“You turn on the tape of UTSA, and they get your attention quickly; with their schemes, personnel, and the way they play the game. Clearly, they had a lot of success last season, and then they’ve had two really hard-fought games here to start the year. A gut-wrenching loss to Houston and then turned around with a great win versus Army; which is tough to do against the triple-option. So, they have our attention. That didn’t take long this morning when we turned the tape on from them. They get your attention; we need to be ready to go.
For the Longhorns getting ready to go might be easier said than done given the damage done against Alabama to their first and second-string quarterbacks. Quinn Ewers was knocked out of the game early with a shoulder injury. And his backup, Hudson Card, suffered a lower leg injury but was able to finish the game despite having little to no plant ability with the bad wheel.
