Going into the 2022 season, Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian is dealing with a quarterback competition. His first option is Hudson Card, who flashed talent during a frustrating 2021 season. Then, there is Quinn Ewers, one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the game.

It’s not going to be easy, but now Steve Sarkisian has finally weighed in on the quarterback battle.

“I don’t think there’s one thing for either guy that you say, ‘That’s the one that this guy needs to do,’ or how to do something,” said Steve Sarkisian. “I think they’ve got things that we’ve asked of them going into Spring ball to work on, while we were in Spring practice, throughout the Summer now that, now, they can kind of put all those tools to use here in Fall camp.”

Each quarterback for Texas has their own, unique challenges that they’re facing. This comes with their development over time. Steve Sarkisian explained this, as well.

“You know, clearly they’re at different faces of their development, right? A lot of it for Hud was, what does his comfort level really look like in our system now in year two and operating, it’s not just about him but how that exudes to his teammates and the performance of everybody around him.”

“For Quinn, it’s knowledge base of the system. It’s one thing to talk the offense and to talk about it in a meeting room, it’s another to actually do it. Then do it consistently on the football field. Which, I’ve touched on Quinn–I give him a lot of credit. Everything that we’ve asked of him, to make a correction from one day to the next, he’s really worked at it and tried to do it,” said Steve Sarkisian.

Having two good options at starting quarterback isn’t a bad problem for Steve Sarkisian and Texas to have. He still needs to make the right decision, in the end.

“I’m excited for both these guys. Both great teammates, both really coachable, both highly competitive, highly driven young men. Both would love the opportunity to take the field when the first team takes the field September 3rd.”
