After eight seasons, four bowl appearances, and a 43-53 record, Tulsa fired head coach Philip Montgomery. This left Tulsa, one of the more difficult jobs in the AAC, open and looking for a new head coach to replace Montgomery.

On the list of coaches to replace Montgomery is Texas offensive assistant Brennan Marion. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic explained.

“One of [GJ] Kinne’s former college teammates, Marion was a Tulsa standout as a receiver and has also risen up the coaching ranks,” Bruce Feldman said.

“Marion helped Jordan Addison win the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver last year while at Pitt before moving on to Texas as the passing game coordinator. The 35-year-old used his ‘Go-Go’ offense to put up big numbers as an FCS offensive coordinator at Howard and William & Mary before he moved up to FBS. Expect Marion to get strong consideration for this job.”

So, it seems like two of the biggest candidates for the Tulsa job are two former Golden Hurricanes players. GJ Kinne was a quarterback and Brennan Marion was one of his wide receivers there.

Brennan Marion has become known for his explosive “Go-Go” offenses while he was an offensive coordinator at Howard and later William & Mary. He then made the move to FBS to be an offensive assistant at Pitt and later Texas. Seen by many as an up-and-comer in the coaching ranks, Marion would be a good hire for Tulsa and a difficult to replace assistant for Texas.

Other candidates at Tulsa

Besides Brennan Marion, there are several candidates that have emerged at Tulsa. One of them is GJ Kinne, the Incarnate Word head coach who comes off the Gus Malzahn tree. He, like Marion, is known for his explosive offenses. There are also several re-tread hires being talked about, like Barry Odam and Justin Fuente.

One notable candidate at Tulsa is Mickey Joseph. The interim coach who replaced Scott Frost at Nebraska will be looking for a new home in 2023. That could very well be as a head coach.

“Joseph, who stabilized the Nebraska program as interim head coach, went 3-6 this season and is expected to be in the mix,” Feldman said.
