Texas baseball coach David Pierce provides initial takeaways after walking off ECU in Game 2
Following their walk-off win in Game 2 of their Super Regional matchup with ECU, Texas coach David Pierce commented on the heart of his team. The Longhorns gave up five runs to ECU in the fifth inning, falling down by as much as 7-2 with just three innings to bat. Texas rallied to take the lead in the eighth inning before winning with a walk-off hit, 9-8 — forcing a Game 3 for the series.
David Pierce on Game 2
“Game 2 in the Super, every pitch is tough for both teams,” began Pierce after the game. “We get our early lead, did a nice job of jumping out in front but just knew they were gonna make a run. We just allowed a big inning again, but there’s a lot of fight in this team and this team is proving it from the day we started up until right now.
“They’re just not gonna give in, they’re not just gonna go away. It’s a really good team we’re playing. But just so proud of our team and how we’ve just shown so much grit. How we’ve fought back and pieced the bullpen together. Looking forward to a Game 3 for sure.”
With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Dylan Campbell fell behind in the count with a quick strike and foul ball before sending a deep shot to right field that fell right in front of the wall for a hit — sealing the game with a 9-8 victory for the Longhorns.

Campbell’s hit was the second time in the final two innings that he put Texas on top of the Pirates. He hit a solo home run in the eighth to give Texas an 8-7 lead heading into the final inning. ECU responded with a solo home run of their own to tie the game back at 8-8, setting up the thrilling finish to Game 2.
The Longhorns were facing elimination after seven innings, following a massive five-run scoring outburst by ECU in the fifth. The Pirates scored two runs off of a double with bases loaded, and finished their scoring with a three-run home run on the very next at-bat. In the seventh inning, Texas gave up another run on a wild pitch — putting them down 7-2 in the middle of the inning.
