Montverde (Fla.) Academy four-star point guard Chris Johnson has committed to Texas, he told On3.

He broke down his decision with On3.

“I wanted to be closer to my family. I’ve always wanted to play for Texas basketball and wanted to start my legacy with “Texas” on the front of my jersey.”

The 6-foot-4 senior from Missouri City, Texas originally committed to the Kansas Jayhawks last August before signing in November. But earlier this month, Johnson requested his release from his National Letter of Intent and reopened his recruitment. This time around, he also considered Arkansas and Washington.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Johnson is the No. 53 overall prospect in the 2023 cycle. He’s also the No. 13 point guard prospect and the No. 3 player in the state of Florida. The On3 Industry Ranking is a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Johnson Scouting Report

“Chris Johnson is a paint touch point guard with great size. He has a quick first-step into the paint and the IQ to make a read with what the defense gives him. The jump shot is a question mark, as his release can inconsistent. However, with he showed confidence this summer with one and two dribble pull ups in the mid range. He has the capability to be a good point of attack defender, with good size, length, and some quick-Twitch. There is a sense of toughness there and as long as he stays focused, there are a lot of tools to build on. The jump shot will need to be ironed out, but he does a lot of things you want a PG to do.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw

More info

The below information is from the ‘Personal Life’ section of Johnson’s On3 profile.

Chris Johnson is a protégée of former Texas star T.J. Ford. The former Longhorns’ guard would pick Johnson up when he was little and take him to whatever gym he needed to go to. Ford made it a priority to help Johnson, who is from the same neighborhood that Ford grew up in Houston. “He’s the ultimate competitor,” Ford said. “He’s capable of doing anything a coach wants on the floor. He’s a high-caliber basketball player. He just knows how to compete. And he lives in the gym. He’s got a lot of things going for him that can make him a hell of a player.” Johnson said he loves scoring, but he also takes pride in being a complete player. “I love playing defense,” Johnson said.
