After reporting this week that Bevo, Texas’ live mascot, wouldn’t be at the SEC Championship between the Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs, some have taken action down The 40 Acres.

A fan created a petition on Bevo’s behalf on Change.org. on Thursday. Its hope is to be able to bring the Longhorn to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in time for kickoff of the SEC Championship tomorrow. As of writing this afternoon, the petition has a total of 5,809 signatures for it.

“This petition emerges from a raw and deeply personal space for us, dedicated fans of the Texas Longhorns team. The upcoming SEC Championship at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia has been clouded by a bias that prohibits our beloved mascot, Bevo, from traveling to the game. This exclusion feels like an unnecessary cut, particularly when the game was already set in Georgia, the home state of our opponents, lending them a ‘home field’ advantage,” it read. “We believe this to be an unbalanced decision by the SEC, favoring Georgia by permitting their mascot while barring ours. Bevo is a symbol of our school spirit and unity, a rallying point for our team that cannot be sidelined or silenced. We wish to underscore the fact that this imbalance tarnishes the sporting spirit of the SEC Championship.”

“We are calling on the SEC to consider and rectify their decision,” it continued. “We must stand up for our school, our team, and most importantly, for Bevo. We, the fans and supporters of Texas, cannot stand by and let this decision go unchallenged. We urge you to add your voice to this cause and sign our petition. Stand with us and support Bevo’s right to join us at the SEC Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.”

Again, overall size constraints have been the reasoning behind Bevo’s absence tomorrow. The Southeastern Conference had concerns about how they’d have enough space on the field to have an enclosure for the live cattle during the event. So, for the safety of the animal and those on the sidelines, he will not be in attendance on Saturday.

However, Uga, Georgia’s bulldog, will be there. He’ll make the trip from Athens in what should feel like home for him and the ‘Dawgs tomorrow in Atlanta.

This will be the first-ever appearance for Texas in the SEC Championship. With that, they want the full experience while they’re there, which includes Bevo being there for the Longhorns.
