The Texas defense continued to battle though injury problems heading into the much-needed bye week. Without anyone on the schedule, the Longhorns have a chance to regroup and bring back key pieces.

During his Monday press conference, coach Steve Sarkisian provides injury updates for linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and defensive back Kitan Crawford, as well as others.

Overshown entered the 2021 season as Texas’ top linebacker, combining experience and skill in his fourth season. However, a concussion slowed things down, forcing him to pass safety protocols.

“Obviously, DeMarvion (Overshown) was a concussion, so those are tough to predict,” said Sarkisian. “I think we’re fortunate that we have the bye this week, so we have some time before the next time we take the field. But concussions are what they are – it’s not a broken bone where you can say ‘it’s six weeks or something like that – they take on however it effects each individual, so we’ll monitor that.”

DeMarvion Overshown was playing good football when he went down with a concussion against Oklahoma State, recording 56 tackles and two sacks over the first seven games.

Another missing piece on defense is Kitan Crawford, one of the fastest players on the Longhorns roster. Steve Sarkisian did not provide specifics on the sophomore’s injury but classified him separately from others.

“Kitan Crawford will really be day-to-day as we move forward with him,” said Sarkisian. “And the rest of the guys are surgery guys so they’re going to be out here for a little bit.”

Crawford has just five tackles this season but helped fill gaps in the Longhorns secondary across multiple games.

Steve Sarkisian sends message to fans, recruits

Texas lost on Saturday to Oklahoma State at home. While the Longhorns didn’t come away with the win, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was blown away by the support from fans. Attendance for the game was just shy of 100,000.

As Texas continues to trek on this season, Sarkisian knows that Texas is going to need the fans to continue their support. Texas is now 4-3 on the season with two consecutive losses.

“One, we’ve got an unbelievable fan base here,” Sarkisian said. “The support has been tremendous. I recognize when you kick off at 11 a.m., that’s not easy for everybody. Everybody’s got other things going on in their lives. Obviously Longhorn football, it carries a lot of weight and it’s very important, but other people have things going on. So, 11 a.m. kicks aren’t easy. So, to have that support was tremendous for our own players. I think we’ve got an exciting brand of football.”
