Things are trending up right now for Texas football — both on the field and the recruiting trail.
The Longhorns just knocked off No. 3 Alabama last weekend and have jumped as high as No. 4 in the national polls. They’re trending heavily to land one of the country’s top offensive linemen, Brandon Baker, and they’re also in a strong position with five-star St. Louis (Mo.) University High wideout Ryan Wingo.
A prediction in Texas’ favor for Wingo went into the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) this week from Texas recruiting insider Gerry Hamilton. And On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons believes the Longhorns have a chance to make a major statement with him in town for the Wyoming game this weekend.
“I think definitely it’s trending toward an earlier decision than December. He was looking to go to December 20, the first day of the Early Signing Period,” Simmons said Thursday during On3’s Inside Scoop recruiting show. “Since that time, he’s kind of taken a step back, looked at the opportunities, and I think Texas has a great chance this weekend to make that final statement. He had a great official visit there back in June.”
Longhorns battling Missouri and Tennessee for Wingo
In addition to Texas, Wingo also took official visits this summer to Missouri, Michigan and Georgia. The Wolverines and Bulldogs look to have faded out of the race, while the Tigers and Tennessee seem to be the two biggest threats to Texas landing the football and track star.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian has made Wingo a priority for more than a year and taken a personal investment in his recruitment. And that is paying off, Simmons said.

“He has been a major target for Texas dating back to June 2022, over a year ago,” he added. “Sark has been involved in this one from the beginning. Wingo loved the performance against Alabama last weekend in that big in Tuscaloosa. A lot of things are playing in favor for Texas right now.
… Right now Texas is in great position with Ryan Wingo.”
Wingo’s commitment date still remains on the books for December 20, but it will something to watch for if that date gets a lot closer after this weekend’s visit.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder is the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the country’s No. 7 wide receiver and the No. 2 recruit in the Show-Me State.
