Hudson Card is a former On3 Consensus four-star quarterback who could’ve entered the NCAA Transfer Portal during the college football offseason and quickly found a new home. However, he didn’t want to do that – instead making the decision to stay put with the Longhorns with hopes of becoming the team’s starter for the upcoming 2022 season.

While Card performed well in limited time last season, throwing for 590 yards, five touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 17 yards and another touchdown in seven games, he has a legitimate chance to be Texas’ starting quarterback – but he’ll have to beat out former On3 Consensus five-star talent and Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers for the job.

Although Ewers didn’t earn any playing time during his freshman season at Ohio State as he was behind standout C.J. Stroud in the quarterback room, he’s still a highly-touted signal-caller who is now back home and ready to lead a team – so Card has plenty of work to do throughout the rest of the spring period and into summer workouts and fall camp to beat out Ewers for the primary spot.

Meeting with reporters on Thursday, Card made it clear that Texas is where he wants to be and he’s looking forward to competing for the starting quarterback job ahead of the 2022 season.

“I mean, this is where I’ve always wanted to play,” Card said. “It’s been my dream school. There’ll be competition everywhere, so I decided just to give it my best shot – and a lot of it, too, is faith and that sort of thing. It’s just where I want to be at this moment, so I’m going to try to take advantage of it.”

Texas – who was then quarterbacked by Casey Thompson – is coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in 2021, which included a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play. With Card and Ewers now in the mix for the starting quarterback job, head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are hoping for a much better overall product in 2022.
