Texas forward Dillon Mitchell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal
Texas forward Dillon Mitchell is planning to enter his name in the transfer portal.
Mitchell just completed his sophomore season in Austin. In total, he started in 71 of his 72 appearances as a Longhorn the last two years.
In his pair of collegiate seasons, Mitchell has averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 60.2% from the field. After returning to The 40 Acres rather than entering the 2023 NBA Draft, Mitchell averaged 9.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and a steal while shooting 58.5% overall in year two.
Mitchell, a Tampa, Florida native, played in high school at Montverde Academy. He was a five-star prospect and the No. 4 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle. He was after just Dereck Lively II (Duke, Dallas Mavericks), Dariq Whitehead (Duke, Brooklyn Nets), and Nick Smith Jr. (Arkansas, Charlotte Hornets). That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was also the No. 2 SF and No. 2 player from Florida behind only Whitehead, his Montverde teammate.
Mitchell was the top recruit to commit to the Longhorns as part of their No. 14 class in 2022. He came in alongside Arterio Morris, Rowan Brumbaugh, and Alex Anamekwe. Assuming Mitchell does eventually enter, all four of those players have now left Texas by transfer after two seasons.

Mitchell would be the third transfer to leave Austin to this point in this portal cycle. Anamekwe is already in along with Chris Johnson, a point guard and top prospect from last season’s two-man recruiting class.
In turn, Texas has already added a trio of players from out of the portal. The Longhorns picked up a pair of Sycamores from Indiana State in PG Julian Larry, who comes from Frisco, and F Jayson Kent. They also earned a commitment from Tramon Mark, a Dickinson, Texas native who spent last season at Arkansas after starting his career at Houston.
Mitchell has been a high-flyer who made his impact while at Texas. Now, when or if he officially enters, he’ll be quite the addition for another program in the country out of the portal.
