Texas to hire former Missouri coach Frank Haith as an assistant coach
The Texas basketball program is set to hire long-time basketball coach Frank Haith, who was previously the head coach at Miami, Missouri and Tulsa.
This news was reported earlier this week by On3’s Gerry Hamilton. Now, Haith seems primed to head to Austin for next season.
Haith spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant at Memphis on Penny Hardaway’s staff.
He will add a very veteran and experienced piece to the staff of new Texas coach Rodney Terry, who was named the full-time coach for the Longhorns following the NCAA Tournament after serving on an interim basis for most of the season.
Haith was named the Associated Press’ Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012 for the coaching job he did at Missouri. He was also named the AP National Coach of the Year.
In addition to those awards, Haith was also more recently named the 2020 AAC Coach of the Year while at Tulsa.
The opening on Texas’ staff came in part because Terry was elevated to the head coaching role. Terry was previously an assistant on Chris Beard‘s Texas staff, but Beard was suspended and then later dismissed by Texas after an arrest on aggravated assault charges.
More info on Frank Haith
Frank Haith’s college basketball coaching career goes back to 1985, when he first took a job as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Elon. He worked there until 1989.
Haith then jumped to a more major program, serving as an assistant at Wake Forest for a year.
From 1990-92 he then went to UNC Wilmington before starting a more extended run of coaching stints at high-majors.

From 1992-95 Haith worked as a Texas A&M assistant, then he spent the 1995-96 season at Penn State. He returned to Texas A&M the following year, then returned to Wake Forest from 1997-2001. His final stint as an assistant before getting a head coaching gig came at Texas, where he worked from 2001-04.
In 2004, Haith was hired as the head coach at Miami. He had a good run during his seven years there, going 129-101 overall.
He took the Missouri job in 2011 and had immediate success, going 30-5 and 14-4 in the Big 12, earning him Coach of the Year honors. But Missouri ran afoul of the NCAA under Haith’s watch and all of its wins from the 2013-14 season, Haith’s final one with the program, were vacated.
Haith then took the Tulsa head coaching job, where he spent eight seasons. He went 138-108 overall but managed a 21-10 record and won the American Athletic Conference in 2019-20. Unfortunately for Haith, the postseason was canceled due to COVID-19.
Haith resigned from the Tulsa job on March 12, 2022 and subsequently took a job as an assistant coach on Memphis’ staff.
