The Arizona Cardinals got a big win over the San Fransisco 49ers Sunday afternoon, 31-17. The win vaulted them into an 8-1 record and guaranteed they will be at least tied for first in the NFC West at the end of the week.

After the game, Kliff Kingsbury had some fun trolling the Longhorns. The Cardinals head coach said he was happy for Texas fans, getting to enjoy Colt McCoy’s solid performance after the loss to Iowa State on Saturday.

McCoy got to start in place of the injured Kyler Murray. He finished with 249 passing yards and a touchdown on 22/26 passing. Now on his sixth team throughout an 11-year career, Sunday was just McCoy’s fourth win as a starter since 2014.

As for the shot toward Texas, Kingsbury is just remembering his roots from his Texas Tech days. Being starting quarterback from 2000-2002, he was 1-2 against the Longhorns. During his six years as the Red Raiders head coach, Kingsbury dropped four out of the six matchups.

Nonetheless, the opportunity to troll an old conference rival out of left field is too good to pass up for somebody like Kingsbury.

Kingsbury calls screen pass for McCoy TD

McCoy’s sole touchdown of the day came on a screen pass to running back James Connor. Just getting it over the finer tips of Joey Bosa, Connor was able to reverse field and outrun the entire 49er defense for the score.

McCoy’s former team struggles

It’s been a rough few weeks for Longhorn fans, even without Kingsbury rubbing salts in the wound. Of the four consecutive losses, three have come with a double-digit lead in the second half. Saturday against Iowa State was the opposite, a straight thumping from start to finish.

A quarterback change was made from head coach Steve Sarkisian as well, moving off from Casey Thompson in favor of redshirt freshman Hudson Card. Add in injuries from star running back Bijan Robinson and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and Texas got blown out 30-7. Possibly a new low for the program.

Texas has been searching the high of when McCoy was on campus. During his final season in Austin, the Longhorns went a perfect 12-0 in the regular season before beating Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game and qualifying for the BCS National Championship.

While a shoulder injury derailed the national championship against Alabama, it’s been a decade-plus of the Longhorns trying to reach the same heights. Sarkisian is now the third straight coach since Mack Brown left to start their career 4-5.
