Expectations were high this season for Texas, being ranked No. 1 before the season began. Head coach David Pierce has a long history of winning and getting to the College World Series but never has been able to lift the national championship trophy.

The season came to an end on Sunday afternoon after a gut-wrenching loss to in-state rival Texas A&M. Texas came to Omaha hoping to make a deep run but is now heading back to Austin after just two games. Pierce commented on what he was thinking after the game, saying it’s not the best he’s ever felt.

“Honestly, I’m a little numb right now,” Pierce said.

He expanded past that, saying there are still a lot of emotions running through his head. Pierce also thought Texas A&M straight up outplayed Texas and thought his team played below expectations while at the CWS.

“A lot of emotions,” Pierce said. “A lot of thoughts. The Aggies were better than us today. Pretty much a struggle, we don’t feel like we played as well as we can play in the last two games.”

Texas struggled to get the bats rolling, only scoring five runs during their two games. After having one of the more explosive offenses in the country during the regular season — and even the Austin Regional and Greenville Super Regional — it came up short in the College World Series.

Pierce has gone to Omaha three different times with the Longhorns but has come up short each time. It’s been a struggle to even make the championship series for Texas over the past six years. Losing, in general, was always going to be tough to stomach but add in a rivalry loss and it’s a real gut punch.

Once the emotions of losing on Sunday wear off, Pierce will turn his attention to next season where more opportunity awaits.
