When Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns, there was expected to be movement within the quarterback room. It ended up being Casey Thompson, who officially entered the transfer portal on Friday.

Thompson took to Twitter on Sunday, writing goodbye to the Texas program. From the coaching staffs he worked with to the quarterbacks he competed with, Thompson made sure to thank as many people as he possibly could.

“Dear Texas,

Thank you for everything. We’ve been through a lot. These past few years have been an amazing journey, the ups, the downs, everything — I’m thankful for it all,” Thompson said. “I’m thankful for all the relationships. The experiences and lessons I’ve learned will help me in life. They shaped me to become the man I am today and I wouldn’t have grown without adversity. From different coaching staffs, to uncertainty, to waiting for an opportunity, to competing, it’s been a lot, but it’s all apart of a greater plan.”

Thompson was the longtime backup behind now Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger. He burst onto the scene at the end of the 2020 season in the Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes.

Thompson enters the transfer portal

Entering the portal is nothing new for Thompson, with this being his second go around. After the 2018 season, he considered leaving Texas before withdrawing and staying with head coach Tom Herman.

Thompson split time with freshman Hudson Card early in this season before being inserted as the full-time starter before the Rice game. He finished with 2,113 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions on the year. He led the Big 12 in touchdowns despite dealing with a thumb injury.

With the introduction of Quinn Ewers from the transfer portal, the Longhorns’ quarterback room began to fill up. On3 Consensus four-star Maalik Murphy signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday as well. Card and freshman Charles Wright will be the other two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster entering the 2022 season.

“Right now, I’m not going to comment on it right now,” Casey’s father, Charles, told Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman after the news broke. “We just feel it’s in his best interest to seek something else.”

Coming out of high school, Thompson was rated a four-star quarterback on the On3 Consensus. Being a rare Texas player to come out of the state of Oklahoma, the quarterback was being recruited heavily by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
