When discussing legendary players at the University of Texas, two names are usually the first to be brought up. Quarterbacks Vince Young and Colt McCoy are two of the most famous Longhorns ever, with the latter winning a national championship in Austin and McCoy coming just short.

Texas fans now hope Quinn Ewers, who was just named the starting quarterback, is next.

Both McCoy and Young are always willing to give out advice to the younger guys, especially quarterbacks. Ewers recently spoke to McCoy, saying he is trying to absorb what the long-time NFL quarterback has said. While the conversations have been brief, Ewers has learned a few things.

“I’ve talked to him a little bit, not a whole lot,” Ewers said. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s been in the league for a while now. Just the stuff that he’s told us, I try to take into account and do it.”

Ewers then answered the all-important question regarding McCoy. Had the quarterback not gotten hurt during the 2009 national championship, would Texas have won? Ewers certainly thinks so, giving a short and sweet “yeah” with a smile when answering.

Even for somebody as young as Ewers, Vince Young is the face of the Texas program. It will take something impressive to top his 2005 national championship performance, scoring the game-winning touchdown against USC.

Ewers received from Young recently too, with the vet telling the youngster to not be nervous. He wants Ewers to go out there and play the game he has throughout his life.

“It’s wild,” said Ewers. “From all the stuff that he’s done here and all the stuff I have seen. I was pretty young — I was like two when he won the natty. Just seeing him. I got to say hello. It’s good to see him. He just said ‘don’t be nervous, just play your game.’ It’s cool to see players like him come back and still support this University.”

Ewers is one of the more talked about prospects coming out of high school, earning Five-Star Plus+ status on the On3 Consensus. He was the third overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class and topped the state of Texas.

Young was in a similar spot, being one of the highest-rated recruits of all time. Ewers will have a similar goal as him, wanting to win a national championship for Texas.
