Steve Sarkisian’s decision to name Quinn Ewers the starter surprised some. Reports out of Austin stated Hudson Card was likely to be the guy and shortly after, the Texas head coach made his decision known to the public. The Ohio State transfer would lead the Longhorns onto the field against Louisiana-Monroe.

For the first time since being named the starter, Ewers spoke to the media and had a humble reaction. He said since Sarkisian’s decision, the pressure has been taken off and everything is easier. Even so, he credited Card and still wants to “grow off” the more experienced guy.

“It’s been a great week for me and the team,” Ewers said. “I feel like once Sark named the starter it’s gotten easier, at least for me. Obviously, Hudson is a great quarterback and I’m excited to still grow off each other but this week has been a lot of fun.”

Ewers said a personal conversation with Sarkisian is how the news was broken to him. Card had the same treatment, with Ewers saying the head coach “wanted to respect” the two quarterbacks.

“He spoke to us individually,” said Ewers. “He just wanted to respect me and Hudson. I’m just super excited for this year.”

Playing for Texas “a dream” for Quinn Ewers

It’s no secret Ewers grew up a Texas fan. Originally committing to the program coming out of high school, he made the announcement by posting photos of himself as a small kid wearing the burnt orange. After a brief stint with Ohio State, Ewers is now living his dream — playing football for the University of Texas.

“This has been a dream for me. Growing up, I was a huge Longhorn fan and I’m just excited to have the opportunity. God blessed me. Just super humbled and excited.”

While the dream is going to be played out, Ewers has not thrown a pass in a long time. He last started as a high school junior (January 2021) in the state championship game with Southlake Carroll. Ewers says there will be butterflies heading into the Sept. 3 opener but thinks they will vanish after the first play.

“Excited, not anxious. Obviously, there’s going to be butterflies in the locker room and that first play. But after the first play, it’s back to the basics.”

Ewers is one of the more talked about prospects coming out of high school, earning Five-Star Plus+ status on the On3 Consensus. He was the third overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class and topped the state of Texas.
