Steve Sarkisian enters Year Two at Texas needing to get some big-time wins. The season began on Saturday in Austin, having a nonconference matchup against Louisiana-Monroe on the schedule. Luckily for the head coach, the Longhorns wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

After an impressive first drive from the Texas defense, they forced ULM to punt. Special teams were actually a place of strength last season and it seemingly has transitioned into 2022.

D’Shawn Jamison blocked the punt and Keilan Robinson was johnny-on-the-spot. Instead of diving on the ball, Robinson decided to pick it up. He converted the scoop ‘n score, giving Texas an early 7-0 lead. A hat tip to special teams coach Jeff Banks for this one.

Running back has been a position of strength for Texas over the past few years, with Robinson lower on the depth chart. He has made his presence known on special teams since arriving from Alabama. In last year’s opener against Louisiana, Robinson was the one who blocked the punt. However, that one went out of bounds for a safety instead of a touchdown.

Texas off to quick start through Keilan Robinson

Getting off to quick starts is nothing new for Texas, doing so consistently during the 2021 season. The second half is where things would fall apart both offensively and defensively. While Saturday’s first touchdown came from the special teams unit, the Longhorns will want to play consistent football for all four quarters.

Especially against an opponent such as ULM.

Since the touchdown, Louisiana-Monroe has been able to get on the scoreboard themselves. After a Quinn Ewers interception on his first drive, the Warhawks converted on good field position with a field goal.
