Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are wrapping up their fall camp and preparing for their season opener against Louisiana Monroe in Week 1. The Longhorns’ roster is loaded with talent this season, but will everybody be healthy and ready for the start of the year? Recently the Longhorns headman provided an injury update on several Texas players.

“Injury-wise, pretty status quo from what was going into the scrimmage,” said Sarkisian. “The only guy that got a little nicked up was Kelvin Banks, nothing serious. He should probably be back practicing tomorrow. But I feel good about Roschon (Johnson) getting back here going this week. Jahdae Barron is getting back going this week. Cole Hutson is already back practicing this week; so a lot of the guys that we felt would be back are back; Troy’s (Omeire) back practicing. So a lot of the guys, as we thought, have worked themselves back into practice.

“We practice hard, and I get that. But we also want to make sure we’re fresh and healthy going into that first ball game.”

The Texas roster appears to be healthy and good to go for the start of the season. Hopefully for them, everybody remains healthy after their season opener Saturday, Sep 3. Because right after that game, Texas has a monumental match-up against the top-ranked team in the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2.

Sarkisian shares his message to Hudson Card following Texas quarterback competition

The Longhorns finally named Quinn Ewers as the team’s starting quarterback. That means that Hudson Card, who had significant playing time in 2021, will start the year as a backup.

While speaking to the media, Steve Sarkisian explained how he broke the news to Hudson Card and the message that he gave him.

“It goes without saying, but sometimes when you’re put in that position and you’re in a really contested battle, and the other guy gets named the starter, you can lose sight of potential opportunities and things that are in front of you,” Steve Sarkisian said.

“We did make that point to Hudson,” Steve Sarkisian emphasized. “And made that very clear, you know. Hudson’s job is to compete still, every day. And to either make Quinn better or pass him, and I expect nothing less of Hudson than to do that.”

Steve Sarkisian is addressing the reality of modern college football. In part, this means quarterbacks transfer when they lose starting jobs. On the other hand, they sometimes do this and miss out on opportunities due to injuries or poor play ahead of them. So, it’s an important decision whether or not to transfer.
