Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the University of Texas Longhorns just lost an epic shootout against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, this insult comes with injury. Sarkisian said that sophomore receiver Jordan Whittington suffered a clavicle injury in their 55-48 loss.

The sophomore from Cuero, Tx went for three catches for 35 yards in the game. He also added in one rush for eight yards but failed to score a touchdown on the ground or through the air. Whittington was on the sideline after suffering his injury. But in the fourth quarter, he left back to the locker room for further evaluation and did not return to the field of play. Only time will tell if the injury is significant enough for him to miss an extended amount of time.

The game itself was a game of the year in the making with a wild beginning, middle, and end, with the Longhorns succumbing when it mattered most.

In the first half, Alex Grinch’s Sooners defense could not stop the Longhorns, as Texas marched down the field. The Longhorns reached the endzone on three of their first four drives.

After Texas scored their fifth touchdown of the first half, going up 35-17, the Sooners head coach Lincon Riley made a change at quarterback. He replaced once-Heisman-hopeful Spencer Rattler with true freshman Caleb Williams. Williams who scored the Sooners’ first touchdown on a 66-yard scamper to convert a fourth down, lead the team to a 38-20 deficit at the half.

The second half is when this fell apart for the Longhorns. After scoring 38 in the first half, they could only muster up 10 points in the second. And their only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter to tie the game after Oklahoma took the lead.

The game essentially ended on a walk-off touchdown run by the Sooners. Oklahoma was trying to set up their kicker with ideal placing to attempt a game-winning field goal. But running back Kennedy Brooks found a seem and broke free for a 33-yard touchdown run. There were three seconds left on the clock, but that was not enough time for the Longhorns to do anything.

And after a thrilling loss, the Texas Longhorns will look to pick themselves up and recover against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Unfortunately for them, it looks like it could be without stud receiver Jordan Whittington.
