Texas trailed Oklahoma 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning of the Women’s College World Series on Thursday when third baseman Mia Scott made a huge base-running error.

Scott had just gotten a big hit to cut the Oklahoma lead to 1, and Texas was set to have runners on the corners with two outs and the heart of the order up.

Instead, Mia Scott wandered too far off of first base after her single, and she was tagged out at first, ending the inning. Oklahoma would go on to add three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to all but put the game away.

Afterwards, Texas coach Mike White was asked about Scott’s base-running blunder.

“No one feels worse than Mia Scott right now. Everything happens for a reason. She’s cheeky. That’s part of her MO. That’s what she does. If you get caught out, you better be able to stand for it,” Mike Scott said.

“It was a big moment in that game. Everybody knows it. She’s already beaten herself up. I know she is. Hopefully she learns from that.”

Scott regularly tries to make things happen when running the bases, but in this case it came back to bite her. It’s a mistake that Scott is hopeful the junior won’t make again next season.

“I mean, that’s part of how she is. She’s really aggressive. Pushes the envelope a lot of times,” Scott said. “This time it didn’t work out.”

Patty Gasso shares emotions of winning fourth straight national title

While the loss was tough for Mia Scott, Mike White and the Texas program, it allowed Oklahoma to make some history.

Sooners coach Patty Gasso was visibly emotional in the moments following Oklahoma‘s fourth-consecutive national championship victory on Thursday.

The Sooners swept rival Texas in two games, defeating the Longhorns 8-4 on Thursday to cap off the four-peat — the first of its kind at the Division I level.

However, the elusive fourth championship wasn’t always Oklahoma’s for the taking. Following the win, the Oklahoma head coach attempted to explain the hardships and hurdles that the Sooners had to overcome during the offseason, regular season and into their playoff run.

“It was really hard because we had to do some things outside of the field to kind of connect a little bit better and they really stepped up as women,” Gasso told ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game. “I don’t even know how to explain it. They’re just gritty and they’re fearless. They lived that way, they practiced that way. You see the way they play. They’re full of energy, they’re full passion and we will not apologize for that because that’s the way they play the game. And that’s why we’re here right now.”
