Officials from the Texas Longhorns have released a joint statement following the Georgia game. In it, they condemned the actions of some fans, throwing debris and trash on the field in the second half.

Included in the joint statement were the UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife, UT President Jay Hartzell, and UT Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. They noted both that they don’t condone the actions of some fans, apologized for those actions, and shared they will take steps to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

“While we deeply appreciate the passion and loyalty of our fan base at the University of Texas at Austin, we do not condone the unsportsmanlike conduct that was exhibited by some individuals throwing objects onto the field during last night’s game and sincerely apologize to the University of Georgia players, coaches, and fans, as well as the Southeastern Conference and officiating crew,” the statement read. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Respect, sportsmanship, and fairness are the values that drive our program, and we expect all of our fans to uphold these standards. We are committed to fostering a positive environment for all participants, teams, officials, and fans, and we will take steps to ensure that this type of behavior does not happen again. We appreciate the support of Longhorn Nation and are confident that, moving forward, we will continue to represent our university with pride and respect. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

The fans began throwing debris onto the field following a controversial defensive pass interference call. At the time, referees flagged Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron on a player where he intercepted the ball and made a good return. That, then wiped the interception off the board.

Play was then stopped due to fans throwing debris onto the field. That’s when head coach Steve Sarkisian tried to convince the crowd to stop throwing things onto the field and helped get things cleaned up as quickly as possible. It was also during that time when officials got together and decided to pick up the pass interference flag that they had already announced, giving the ball to Texas in the process and making for a controversial moment in the game.

At the time, Texas was trying to come from behind after Georgia jumped out to a 23-0 lead at halftime. That interception was a key moment in the comeback attempt. However, it was ultimately not enough and the Bulldogs left Austin with a 30-15 win.
