After winning the Big 12 Championship under interim coach Rodney Terry, Texas players answered why he should be their permanent coach. Terry and the Longhorns defeated Kansas for the Big 12 title on Saturday, increasing pressure from fans — and the team itself — to name Terry the next head coach of the program.

During their postgame media appearance, Marcus Carr, Sir’Jabari Rice and Brock Cunningham were all asked why they felt Terry deserved the permanent job with Texas.

“Watch the game we just played and every single game we played this season,” answered Carr simply.

“If you watch the locker room afterwards, a lot of praise going to RT [Rodney Terry]. Just everything that we’ve been through, for us to get to this point right now. Especially to win it, it’s like… it’s not us. I mean, we’re playing the game but our preparation comes from him. So everything is RT,” added Rice.

“My two cents on it is his appreciation for every day. You can be coming off a bad loss or a great win, but he’s still gonna appreciate the day and have a great attitude going into that day and that’s huge,” closed Cunningham.

Terry helped coach the Longhorns to a 18-7 record over his stretch as interim coach, but a Big 12 title is a nearly indisputable feather in his cap after Saturday’s performance. The Longhorns are also expected to make a deep run in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, as one of the expected top seeds coming into March Madness.

Texas players weren’t the only people calling for Terry to get the job after his work this season, as legendary ESPN commentator Dick Vitale said while the game was still being played that Texas had their guy right in front of the bench already.

“Coach Terry, I’m telling the people of Texas… if they don’t hire that guy full time they are out of their mind. He has done an amazing job with this team. Amazing job,” said Vitale as Texas carried a double digit lead into the final stretch of the game.
